The photo below is a Chital or Spotted Axis deer and it is found in Sri Lanka and most of India. Notice the difference between the antlers of the Chital and the Fallow deer in the picture above.

Here's another anecdote from Sir Walter Scott. It reminded me of something you told me about not remembering anything you post in the forums.

Sir Walter Scott's The Bride of Lammermoor was written while its author was addicted to laudanum. In 1819, Scott read the proofs of the completed book - and claimed that he did not recognize a single character, incident, or conversation found therein.

As I have become familiar with some of the places in Oregon through The Advent of Dionysus, I've acquired a fondness for the beautiful scenery I've seen through photos and the descriptions of the places mentioned in the book.


Brice Creek: A Slice of Beauty and Wonder Near Eugene

The Brice Creek Roadless Area is located 25 miles southeast of Cottage Grove. Within its boundaries are some of the last remaining old-growth forests in this otherwise heavily logged drainage.

The real treasure of the area is the creek itself. The creek bed was created when sections of basalt formations collided, resulting in incredible waterfalls. In one section of the creek, massive boulders sprout vine maple umbrellas above four contiguous waterfalls while hundreds of fragile stemmed maiden ferns dance in the swirling wind.

Just a short drive from Eugene and Cottage Grove, Brice Creek's trails are a favorite destination for many. Old-growth stands of Douglas-fir, western hemlock and even a few pockets of sugar pine dominate the forest's canopy. Sedum, monkey flower, colt's foot and other herbaceous plants grow on numerous rock outcroppings. Certain sections of Brice Creek have had recent understory burns, and unique plants like the candystick abound. Other sections are thick with rhododendrons and chinquapins.

Under the Northwest Forest Plan, Brice Creek's designation as "matrix land" has prompted plans for clearcutting in the Wyatt Timber Sale. Since the Northwest Forest Plan does not protect municipal drinking watersheds, it is crucial to designate Brice Creek as Wilderness. This will protect the best of what is left of this fragmented watershed and help ensure that it remains a healthy drinking water source for the residents of Cottage Grove.

The McKenzie River is located about three hours southeast of Portland, Oregon and two hours east of the Oregon Coast. It's midway between Bend and Eugene, on the western slopes of the Central Oregon Cascade Mountains. With easy access from several metropolitan areas and the coast, the McKenzie River remains relatively isolated in the heart of the Cascade Mountain Range.

The Illinois River is a tributary of the Rogue River, approximately 75 mi (120 km) long, in southwestern Oregon in the United States. It drains a mountainous area of the Coastal Range in the southwestern corner of the state.

It rises in southern Josephine County, in the Red Buttes Wilderness Area, near Whiskey Peak on the California state line, approximately 30 mi (48 km) southwest of Medford. It flows generally northwest in a winding course along the west side of the Klamath Mountains, past Cave Junction, Kerby and through the Siskiyou National Forest. It joins the Rogue River from the south on the Curry-Josephine county line, approximately 15 mi (24 km) from the Pacific Ocean.
